New Delhi — In his latest “Mann Ki Baat” radio address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proudly announced that Charaideo Maidam in Assam has been officially included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This designation marks India’s 43rd site on the prestigious list and is the first from the Northeast region of the country.

Prime Minister Modi shared the historical significance of Charaideo Maidam, explaining that “Charaideo” translates to “shining city on the hills.” He highlighted that this site was the original capital of the Ahom dynasty, an important era in Indian history. The Maidams are ancient burial mounds where the Ahom people traditionally preserved the remains of their ancestors and their treasured belongings.

“This recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a testament to the rich cultural and historical significance of Charaideo Maidam. It reflects our heritage and the legacy of the Ahom dynasty, which played a vital role in shaping the history of Assam and India,” Modi said during his broadcast.

The Prime Minister emphasized that this international recognition will boost tourism in the region, attracting more visitors to explore and appreciate the cultural richness of Charaideo Maidam. “With this honor, Charaideo Maidam will now be on the global map of heritage sites, which will enhance its visibility and attract tourists from around the world,” he added.

Modi urged people to incorporate Charaideo Maidam into their travel plans and experience this historical gem firsthand. “I encourage everyone to visit Charaideo Maidam and witness the grandeur of our heritage. It is a remarkable site that holds the essence of our cultural history and deserves to be explored,” he said.

The inclusion of Charaideo Maidam on the UNESCO World Heritage list is expected to not only promote cultural tourism but also contribute to the preservation and appreciation of India’s diverse historical legacy. As the first site from Northeast India to receive this honor, it represents a significant milestone in the recognition of the region’s rich cultural heritage on the global stage.
