128 Crore Rail Project Transforms Jaisalmer into Emerging Technical Hub, Paves Way for More Trains

Date:

Jodhpur/Jaisalmer, April 2026: A major infrastructure upgrade by North Western Railway has transformed Jaisalmer into an emerging technical and maintenance hub, with a ₹128 crore project significantly enhancing railway operations in the region.

Jaisalmer Becomes Rail Maintenance Hub

Under the project, Jaisalmer Railway Station has been upgraded into a state-of-the-art maintenance and operational hub, boosting its capacity to handle more trains.

The development marks a key step in strengthening railway infrastructure in western Rajasthan.

Key Infrastructure Additions

The project includes several major upgrades aimed at improving efficiency:

  • Construction of new trip sheds and maintenance facilities
  • Installation of a wheel lathe line for coach maintenance
  • Laying of 4.8 km of new railway track, increasing total track capacity

These enhancements have improved the station’s ability to maintain coaches and manage higher train volumes efficiently.

Boost to Train Operations and Connectivity

With increased infrastructure and maintenance capacity, the upgraded facility will:

  • Reduce train turnaround time
  • Increase holding capacity for trains
  • Enable introduction of new train services

Officials say the project will play a crucial role in expanding rail connectivity to Jaisalmer, a key tourist and strategic location.

Economic and Strategic Significance

The development is expected to:

  • Boost tourism in Jaisalmer
  • Improve logistics and regional connectivity
  • Strengthen infrastructure in border areas of Rajasthan

Given Jaisalmer’s proximity to the India-Pakistan border, the upgraded railway infrastructure also holds strategic importance.

Part of Larger Railway Modernisation Push

The project reflects Indian Railways’ broader efforts to modernise infrastructure, improve operational efficiency, and support regional development through targeted investments in key locations.
