Date:

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal stated that the central government is fully committed to building a globally competitive and innovation-driven pharmaceutical industry. Simultaneously, the government aims to ensure affordable healthcare services for all.

In a post on the social media platform X, the Union Minister shared that he held a productive meeting with a delegation from the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA), led by its President, Dr. Sharvil Patel. During the meeting, Minister Goyal and industry representatives discussed opportunities to further strengthen India’s pharma innovation ecosystem by attracting greater investment in Research and Development (R&D), clinical research, and advanced therapies.

The discussion also emphasized enhancing collaboration between the government and the pharmaceutical industry to accelerate innovation and boost the global competitiveness of the Indian pharma sector. The Union Minister reiterated the Modi government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for the pharmaceutical industry—one that fosters innovation while ensuring the availability of affordable healthcare for the public.

India’s pharmaceutical industry is among the largest in the world and plays a pivotal role in supplying affordable generic medicines to global markets. The government is undertaking several initiatives to promote domestic manufacturing, research, and innovation within this sector.

Additionally, according to a report, 65 deals worth $13.9 billion were recorded in India’s pharma and healthcare sector during the second quarter of 2026. Even after excluding the largest overseas acquisition by an Indian pharma company—valued at $11.8 billion—the total deal value rose by 12 percent compared to the previous quarter.

Merger and Acquisition (M&A) activity also showed strength, with 35 M&A deals worth $13.2 billion taking place during this period. The volume of transactions increased by 17 percent quarter-on-quarter, and the total deal value reached an all-time high. Furthermore, overseas acquisitions accounted for 96 percent of the total M&A value.
